Book Suggestions

After years of reading, trying, failing, trying again, I found that very few books gave me the wings that I needed to fly and the skills that I needed to draw and paint. The following books have served me well. - KH

"Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards - I recommend this to anyone who does not have drawing skills or who is just beginning to learn how to draw!!! I wish I had had this book when I first started my art journey. It is very helpful to also have a trusted teacher to help you through the exercises in this book.

"Color Mixing The Van Wyk Way" by Helen Van Wyk - Anything that you can find by Helen Van Wyk is well worth the read. She was my last teacher and, after years of trying to paint, Helen gave me the answer to questions that I didn't know I had. Helen gave me the ability to see color and light. I was so very fortunate to have been able to study with her a year before she died. Helen turned my life around by giving me her years of wisdom and love of painting.

"Helen Van Wyk's Favorite Color Recipes" by Helen Van Wyk - Just like a cookbook - except it is for painting!

"Welcome to My Studio" by Helen Van Wyk - Another of Helen's jewels.

"Painting Flowers the Van Wyk Way" by Helen Van Wyk - Nobody painted flowers like Helen.

"Portraits in Oil the Van Wyk Way" by Helen Van Wyk - Helen could do everything!

"My Thirteen Colors" by Helen Van Wyk - This is a great introduction to each of Helen's Colors!

"Drawing Expressive Portraits" by Paul Leveille - My students find the excercises very helpful.
